What is the difference between LED and OLED(part one)?

Jun 27, 2022

In recent years, OLED screens have attracted more and more attention, and many domestic flagship machines have used OLED screens. Even Apple's iPhone X has finally abandoned LED screens and used OLED screens. Which is better, OLED or custom LED display module, and what is the difference between them?

From the naming point of view, the difference between LED and OLED is only one letter, but the imaging technology is completely different.

Segment LED displays are light-emitting diodes, and the materials used are mainly 3A-5A elemental compound semiconductors. LEDs are classified according to their light-emitting wavelengths, and can be roughly divided into visible light diodes and infrared light-emitting diodes. Its light-emitting principle is to use the combination of electrons and holes in the semiconductor to release the energy in the form of photons to emit light. Generally used in information billboards, infrared products, traffic signs, lighting equipment, optical fiber products.

Small size OLED display is an organic light-emitting diode. It uses a new type of organic semiconductor material (that is, a material containing hydrocarbons), which is coated on a conductive glass sheet, and can emit light of various wavelengths when an electric current is applied. At present, OLED is mainly used in automotive displays, mobile phones, game consoles, handheld portable minicomputers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), car audio and digital cameras, etc.

Let's take a look at the imaging principles of OLED and LED screens. In terms of structure comparison, the OLED screen is simpler than the dot matrix LED display structure, which means that the OLED screen can be made thinner. From the point of view of the light-emitting principle, the LCD liquid crystal screen is used for display and does not emit light itself, so it needs a backlight source; while the OLED organic diode does not need a backlight source, it emits light and displays color by itself.
