The difference between OLED and TFT part two

The difference between OLED and TFT part two

Nov 30, 2023

TFT is the abbreviation of "Thin Film Transistor", which generally refers to thin film liquid crystal displays, but actually refers to thin film transistors (matrix) - which can "actively" control each independent pixel on the screen, which is The origin of the so-called active matrix TFT (active matrix TFT). So how is the image generated? The basic principle is very simple: the display screen is composed of many pixels that can emit light of any color. As long as each pixel is controlled to display the corresponding color, the purpose can be achieved. Backlight technology is generally used in TFT LCD touch display. In order to accurately control the color and brightness of each pixel, it is necessary to install a shutter-like switch behind each pixel. When the "louver" is opened, light can pass through, and " When the blinds are closed, no light can come through. Of course, technically it's not as simple as what I just said.

Although OLED with better technology will replace TFT and other LCDs in the future, organic light-emitting display technology still has shortcomings such as short service life and difficulty in making the screen larger. The structure of OLED can be vividly compared to a piece of hamburger. The luminescent material is a vegetable sandwiched in the middle. Each OLED display unit can controllably produce three different colors of light. OLED, like LCD, is also divided into active and passive types. In passive mode, the unit selected by the row and column address is lit; in active mode, there is a thin film transistor (TFT) behind the OLED unit, and the light-emitting unit is driven by the TFT to light up. As far as the current situation is concerned, passive OLED is more power-saving, but active OLED has better display performance.
